Holding Period has Started…

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

The holding period for The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay, on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, officially begins this Sunday, November 30, 2008. The official opening ceremony will be held the following Thursday, December 4, at 3:00 p.m. at Waimea Bay. This year’s invited surfers, along with the Aikau Family and special guests, will be on hand to celebrate the 24th anniversary of this unique big-wave riding event.

Held in honour of the legendary Hawaiian waterman, Eddie Aikau, The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau gathers 28 of the most skillful and dynamic big-wave surfers from around the world as polled by a comprehensive panel consisting of influential watermen, members of the surf industry, and internationally recognized surfing Associations.

The first memorial event for Aikau was held in 1984 at Sunset Beach, two miles north of Waimea Bay. It was won by local standout Denton Miyamura. Following the inaugural event, The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau moved to Waimea Bay, where it has remained ever since. 2008 marks the event’s 24th anniversary; in only seven of those years have the waves been big enough and the conditions right to hold the contest.

Carlos has bagged just about every big wave event in the world, the only one missing is the Eddie… we’ll keep you posted.

Eddie would go?

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

First life guard on the North Shore, never lost a life on his watch and he dies trying to go for help when the Hokule’a, a double-hulled voyaging canoe, capsizes during a 30-day, 2500 mile journey. In Eddie Aikau’s honor, a Big Wave Invitational was created in 1985 and the event is only held when open-ocean swells reach a minimum of 20 feet at Waimea Bay. Carlos has been invited for the second year in a row and is currently training for waves and spills, like in the image. Opening ceremony is tomorrow - so stoked for you Carlos.

STORM TRACKS ARE HERE..!

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

I know writing in capitals makes it seem as if i am shouting, but that is what we all did when the 08/09 Biomimetic Storm Tracks turned up here yesterday. We have had our fair share of manufacturing jive this year (thanks for bearing with us!), so when they finally arrived in the shire we were over the moon. Been out doing the photo shoot today and the images will be up on the website next few days.

You can see the colours below and if you want to beat the rush, give Nat a call on 01872 554 481 and bag yours now…

Big Wave Season Kicks off…

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Check out this link below - definitely one of the heaviest waves seen in a while from down under.

Hoping that this Northern Hemisphere Winter brings us some more of the same. We’ve got Carlos’ guns here - chomping at their bits - the biggest is a 10′0” rhino chaser. The boys out there in the spots are all ready to go, so we’re just waiting for Huey to throw up the goods. Get sacrificing…

Cornwall Film Festival

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

We were there three years ago, with our surf documentary premiere - Beef or Salmon. The event brought together many of Europe’s surf film makers, opened doors for many trying to crack the industry and praised those who have been involve for quite sometime.

Every year, the film festival seems to treble in size, with more people trying their hands at shooting, editing and delivering that final piece. This year we were invited to get involved as a sponsor as well as help with selecting this years most innovative film. The night promises to bring out some progressive film making with grassroots undertones from the impressive line-up.

Screenings will be followed by music from Mark Kermode’s (BBC’s The Culture Show) skiffle band, The Dodge Brothers and local DJ’s Sir Vinyl of the Fattest.

Saturday November 8 19:00 – Late

Aggityville…

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

We love Autumn here and with it, comes Halloween. This year, we put on the Aggityville Haunted Forest. The plan: to spread a little Halloween love, scare anyone who decided to walk the haunted path and raise a little money for the South West’s Precious Lives Appeal, to build a hospice in Cornwall.

In the end the turnout/support was humbling, we were fully booked, over 100 people showed up to enjoy a few scares, families, children, parents and mates and we can’t thank them enough.

A quick thank you to all who helped out. Skinner’s Brewery, we couldn’t have done it without you. The TapHouse and Driftwood, cheers for organizing and keeping the Ale flowing and to all those who agreed to hang out in the cold and scare the 100+ who showed up.

- Jady, Jody and Sophia - can’t thank you guys enough, sorry about the dog droppings, it was just to dark to see it.

- Toby and Kim - The mask went down a treat and Kimmy… the screams were priceless.

- Nat aka - pumpkin head, you didn’t have to wear the pumpkin the whole time, in any event, sorry about the sprained neck.

- Mel - way to start the groups off and get the casper/moaning down.

- Tommy Kay - money with the chain-saw mate, you took them down.
