Wave Hub - surfers need to be more consistent…

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

We got approached a while ago about this when the Wave Hub debate all kicked off on a surf forum. It suddenly occurred to us that many have not read/know our position, but so you do, below is a response that we made back in July 2006.
This remains our position to date.

31st July 2007. As a forward thinking/environmental surf brand here in Cornwall, we were approached for our opinions on this matter several days ago and made a repsonse earlier this week. The response/ our stance on the issue is below.

Facts are:

1. Anthropogenic climate change is an impending certainty to which there is no
immediate solution. No argument there at all/not up for discussion.
Period.

2. Surfers in general like to consider themselves environmental and
generally speaking more in tune with environmental issues than other
sports groups. True to some extent.

3. At the time of writing, the three studies that have been carried out
indicate that there will possibly be a minor reduction of swell -
say a reduction of 5 inches on a four foot day (absolutely speaking
that is).

4. This is probably the best place in the UK for the location of such a
project (consistently rough sea/coastal sub station etc).

5. It is also a topic that SAS have spent time researching and as the
foremost environmental group in the UK representing our immediate
interests, as much as not being able to predict the future, they have
done their homework and taken a long term view. Believe me.

6. Journalists love sensationalism/provocation.

Conclusion - We, as Surfers, must be more consistent in our
environmental stance.

We should see this as a positive step to a global problem to which we
all have/will contribute (think how many Winter flights to warm surf
spots?) The longer term implications of the exact contribution of the
Project to the energy crisis cannot be gauged at this stage, but a
possible 4 inches less wave size is worth it for forward movement and a
price we should be prepared to pay/we owe.

I don’t see how we as surfers can be genuinely worried about the wider
health of the planet or be true environmentalists, and cannot see this
Project as a forward step (so long as it proceeds responsibly with any
further environmental (not just wave)) consultation is carried
out - goes without saying). How many surfers would be protesting of the
other environmental consequences/effects to marine life etc, where this
project to be located in a non-surf location?

I also see it as a real opportunity for surfers to stand together and
show others (who consider surfers to be ‘close to nature’) that we see
the global problem as so serious that we are prepared to risk/prepared
to pay/owe what might amount to a small hit on our playground.

“Finisterre have spent two years developing the Storm Track jacket with the help of Leeds University Textile Research Department. The outcome is a hard wearing, but lightweight (510g) shell with an ergonomic slim cut, peak hood, watertight cuffs and laser-cut zips, making it ideal for climbers and boarders. Finisterre donates 1% of its sales to the natural environment.”
